Following the outbreak of the One Year War, the Federation Forces consolidated various projects linked to the RX initiative and launched "Operation V," a program that simultaneously developed a high-performance mobile suit and its dedicated mothership. While the initial plan for the GM mass-production model called for specifications comparable to the RX-78, the procurement volume—determined based on the evolving war situation—necessitated a shift to a plan that prioritized minimizing per-unit costs. The RGM-79 GM is the resulting "scaled-down" version of the design.

The RX-79(G), commonly known as the "Ground Type Gundam", was one of the early prototype units produced during the initial phase of the mobile suit mass-production program. Because it was test produced before operational data could be gathered from the RX-78 (which had been under development since the previous year with the goal of creating the ultimate mobile suit), it is based on the RGM-79G, a unit with somewhat limited operational environments. However, the RX-79(G) was designed to adapt to a wide range of combat scenarios through the use of diverse equipment options. In particular, the G-type was designed from the outset without space combat equipment, resulting in a lighter airframe; furthermore, it utilized materials predating the full-scale mass-production plan, creating a high-performance machine whose specifications, at least under gravity, rivaled those of the RX-78.

Prior to Operation Odessa, Federation ground forces deployed Mobile Suit units primarily to areas surrounding territories overrun during the Principality's Earth drop operations; they were prioritized for deployment to front lines where resource deposits, industrial facilities, or the expansion of enemy-controlled territory were of particular concern.

Many of the armor and internal components for the RX-79(G) Ground Type Gundam were either repurposed or replicated from spare parts intended for the prototype RX-78 Gundam, resulting in a shortage of genuine factory-standard parts. Consequently, bases frequently resorted to using parts from other units or equipment for field repairs, leading to the creation of various custom-configured Gundams and GM units across different locations.

The Kojima Battalion was no exception to this trend; for instance, the unit piloted by 08th MS Team leader Ensign Shiro Amada, which had sustained heavy damage during the battle against the Apsalus, underwent extensive modification using parts from units such as the RGM-79(G) GM. In addition, the armament was largely replaced to enhance ground combat capabilities based on data gathered from previous battles. Specifically, the Vulcan cannon and multi-launcher on the left chest, whose tactical effectiveness was questionable, were removed and replaced with a swiveling 12.7mm anti-infantry Vulcan cannon.

The shape of the chest armor was altered to accommodate this change, resulting in improved ballistic resistance; meanwhile, mobility was enhanced through weight-saving measures, such as reducing the number of moving parts in the leg armor. A particularly distinctive feature is the modification of the head structure: the blade antenna, synonymous with "Gundam-type" mobile suits, was replaced with a rod antenna. Two smaller caliber Vulcan cannons were added, and a unique face guard style armor plate was installed on the lower section. I feel like this is as good a time as ever to point out that the name of this mobile suit is based on a piece of real life history. Late into World War II, the Allies built a modified and updated version of the Sherman Tank known as the M4A3E8, otherwise known as the “Easy Eight”. It improved the armor and main gun, and overhauled the suspension.

This tank is so obviously the inspiration for the EZ8 mobile suit.

Although the head of the RX-79(G)Ez-8 was heavily damaged during the battle against the Apsalus, the damage did not warrant a complete replacement; consequently, most of the unit, with the exception of the dual camera device and the basic frame, is constructed from parts procured in the field.

The RX-79(G) utilized genuine parts from the RX-78 series for its head unit, with enhancements made to communication and close combat capabilities in response to frontline demands. Various head configurations existed, including standard, antenna-equipped, and Vulcan-equipped types. However, due to supply constraints, part replacements and upgrades were not always straightforward; combat-induced damage was frequently addressed by repurposing parts from the RGM series.

The Ez8's head was reconstructed using a mix of components. With the exception of the rear computer block, most elements were essentially field-expedient modifications, utilizing parts repurposed from other weaponry and equipment. Procuring RX-78 series parts was extremely difficult during this period, and parts for the RX-79(G) were no exception. While the head of the standard 79(G) incorporated features specialized for ground combat, the Ez8 took a different approach: it eliminated ground-specific equipment, such as the snorkel camera, and added features like a head-mounted Vulcan cannon that had been omitted from the 79(G). Furthermore, due to a shortage of materials like Luna Titanium armor plating, the armor on the forehead and around the chin utilized a unique configuration to achieve the necessary structural strength.

Here we see the first instance of a general trend with this mobile suit. With the OG Ground Type, the Federation put in all sorts of special equipment that they thought would help a lot in terrestrial combat. But months of field experience proved that some of this stuff wasn’t really worth the trouble, and so much of it was removed on the EZ-8 (sometimes replaced with something better, and sometimes replaced with nothing so as to make the MS lighter)

Also, here we get an explanation for why the EZ-8’s face looks so different; they had to bolt on some extra armor plating to make up for the lack of available Luna Titanium.

Torso

While the chest block of the RX-79(G) was designed with a concept specialized for ground combat, it featured many specialized components and armaments that were difficult to utilize effectively in tactical situations; consequently, the Ez8 was re-equipped with weaponry capable of handling both ground and anti-personnel targets.

The Ez-8 has had most of the armaments characteristic of the RX-79(G) removed. This measure was taken to address tactical usability issues, such as the difficulty of using the chest-mounted Vulcan guns and multi-launchers in combat, or the fact that they were excessively powerful for use against ground targets, personnel, or for suppression fire. In particular, the swiveling Vulcan gun added to the front during this modification proved highly effective for suppression and keeping enemies at bay.

While it is true that parts procurement difficulties played a role, the modification was ultimately carried out in accordance with the wishes of the pilot, Ensign Shiro Amada. However, the simplification of structures like the chest panels resulted in reduced weight and improved ease of maintenance and ballistic resistance; in a sense, it became a more practical machine for actual combat. Incidentally, there is also a theory that the chest armor plates were fabricated from modified parts salvaged from captured enemy mobile suits.

Couple things here. First, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a scenario where the Vulcan cannons were considered too powerful.

Second, they refer to the fact that removing some of the chest weapons gave the EZ-8 better ballistic resistance. I think what this means is that by removing all that stuff, there was more space for armor plating, but that’s just a guess.

Third, the final sentence hints at the chest is made from enemy parts, but doesn’t say what. AS luck would have it, the _08th MS Team Official Archive artbook from 2014 spills the beans. Apparently the EZ-8’s chest armor is built out of two Zaku shoulder shields welded together.

Arms

The arm units of the RX-79(G) are virtually identical to those of the RGM-79(G), so they are used on the Ez8 without modification. However, because parts from the "78-series" were used for the shoulder armor, a custom sling bar had to be added.

The RX-79(G) Ground Type Gundam and RGM-79(G) Ground Type GM, which were essentially early-production prototypes or limited-production models, featured a design where units were subdivided as much as possible; parts expected to suffer heavy wear were designed to allow for field repairs. This was done because the Earth's environment, and was one of the specifications proposed based on simulations conducted during MS operations.

Ground combat units could easily foresee a shortage of spare parts; after all, there was no way to ensure an abundant supply of maintenance components for a new weapon that had only just entered active service. Such realities were simply a fact of life for mechanized units deployed to battlefronts characterized by tropical or subtropical climates—environments rife with shifting sands and dense vegetation. Ideally, one would simply swap out entire modular blocks, but in reality, such luxuries were unavailable. Nevertheless, it is no exaggeration to say that an MS would be useless without its arms. In fact, the MS arm—, serving as a versatile manipulator, was an indispensable component, fully demonstrating its capabilities as a platform for various armaments and as a virtually all-purpose piece of heavy machinery.

Legs

For ground-based mobile suits, the leg units are not only critical components, but also the parts subjected to the most severe wear and tear. The Ez8 compensates for a shortage of spare parts and achieves weight reduction by modifying the shape of its final armor plating.

The legs of the RX-79(G) incorporate features specifically designed for ground combat. Spikes have been added to the knee armor to facilitate close-quarters combat. Furthermore, the lower leg section, which in the base RX-78 model housed components such as sub-generators, propellant tanks, and vernier units, now accommodates a high-capacity capacitor and a beam saber rack, resulting in a highly compact, high-density internal structure. The design also prevents the ingress of debris and allows for maintenance to be performed by a small crew; in fact, it is said that the pilot could personally handle a certain level of overhauling for high-stress areas like the foot soles, which are particularly prone to impact damage and metal fatigue. However, this applies only if standard parts can be used properly; depending on the situation, modifications or structural changes may be required.

The Ez8 notably lacks the armor that typically protects the leg joints, and the frontal leg armor differs significantly from that of the original 79(G). Rather than being a result of parts procurement issues, this design choice was intended to simplify the structure, thereby reducing the load on the ankle area and achieving weight reduction. In particular, given that the effectiveness of the knee spikes had been questioned from the start, this is considered a deliberate, proactive modification rather than a measure of last resort.

Here’s another example where they removed a piece of gear from the Ground Type that turned out to be more useful in theory than in practice. All in all it seems that the main thing that made the EZ-8 an upgrade over the Ground Type is its reduced weight.
